No Choking matter…

Slow down and chew your food buddy! As if we weren’t already in love enough with our new daycare and Boden’s teacher, Ms. Angela, we got an extra dose of why we know it’s a great fit. On Wednesday afternoon while eating his lunch, Boden was about to cough, and accidentally breathed in a piece of his apple. Thank goodness they are so attentive and well trained and noticed right away that he was choking. Boden was promptly given the Heimlich – twice – to get that apple out. Although everyone was a little shaken up – by the time I arrived to pick him up, he was laughing and playing and everyone was just fine.

So, the lesson here – make sure you’re up to date on your Certifications and know the Heimlich! Infants after one year of age can be given either the back thrusts or the Heimlich (which even I don’t think I would remember that Boden is old enough for the actual Heimlich). Both striking the back and the Heimlich are shown to be effective, but just make sure you attempt to get the object out if someone starts to choke. Angela told me they just had their refresher course a month ago, so she was ready to go!

How do you pay back a life debt? Why caffeine and alcohol of course!

Read up, and stay prepared!

  1. Sarah,
That must have been so frightening. I remember when Jordan, who was 8 or 9 at the time, was choking on a marble. Bobby knew what to do and was able to get it out. I just screamed and cried, and still do when I think about "what could have happened." Kiss him for us and the wonderful people at the daycare. Thanks for the reminder to be safe and aware at all times.
